There aren't many cities in Europe like Smederevo. Although most Serbian cities arose from villages and settlements, Smederevo was built by Despot Djuradj Brankovic to be the country's capital. Unfortunately, it was Middle Age Serbian Capital until Turks came and occupied the city. Later on, Karadjordje rebuilt Smederevo, which then became a trade center. There are numerous sights nearby, meaning that you can learn about one of Serbia's oldest cities.
The fortress is more than magnificent, so if you are into the Middle Age period, you'll definitely have fun here. Even Romans loved it here and built a couple of famous wineries. In 1806, Dositej Obradovic described Smederevo as one of the most beautiful places in the area. The wine here is often described as one of the best in the world, so make sure to stay here for at least a couple of days.
